Also, if anyone visits Rapa Nui (I recommend it), don't stay at Nayara Hangaroa, it's the only non-locally owned hotel, and the locals don't like it and put up protest signs around the property.

    There was a settlement with the Hito family in 2020 that gave them back control of the land the hotel is on, so it's probably kosher to stay there these days.

      I can't find any info on that, where did you hear that?

      I was there in 2018, so after the Hito family occupied the hotel and were forceably removed in 2011. Apparently the Chile Supreme Court upheld the hotel's ownership of that land.

      It was probably called 12 different names over the eons, so why does it matter so much what we call it now? More English speaking people know what Easter Island is.
