I have been using a flip phone and never had a smart phone . They work better as a phone for me. I recently got a smart phone and do not really like it as a phone and am thinking of moving back to the older flip phone and carrying the smart phone as a tablet (mostly for the camera but also web access and note taking).

For many years I have used a cheap clam shell phone and an Apple iPod Touch (basically a tiny iPad). It works fine for me. Why do I do it? I need Mac compatibility and iPhones are preposterously expensive.

I just run Skype on my tablet.

Have a colleague doing this. His rationale is that the phone is for synchronous communication only.

All the rest lives in the tablet and is both more practical and more cumbersome enough that it is used as a tool and not addictive/wasteful of his concentration. The tablet doesn’t fit in his pockets.
